We've decided to buy a consumer-grade digital video camera before our trip to London. Typically, I would research the hell out of something like this, but time is of the essence, and so I'm calling upon the fine folks who read Long Pauses for advice. I'm not even sure what format to buy. After some quick digging, it looks like DVD cameras are gaining in popularity but aren't yet up to the quality of miniDV, right? I'd like a camera that can shoot in low light and that allows for some flexibility with recording sound. We'd like to get as much bang for the buck as possible, of course, but I realize that what I want from the camera means that we'll be looking at the higher end of the consumer-grade spectrum. Advice?
