It's time to choose another story collection for my English as a Second Language students. This semester I've decided to teach contemporary American writers, partly as an excuse to familiarize myself with authors I should probably be reading anyway. I've narrowed my selection to two choices and am looking for recommendations.
I like Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules because David Sedaris, who edited the collection, balances the contemporary writers with a few older, canonical stories like O'Connor's "Revelation" and Mansfield's "The Garden Party." Also, proceeds from the book go to a good charity. The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories is a more diverse collection of contemporary stories. As far as I can tell, all of them will be new to me. Thoughts?
