The Friday Five

Friday, November 18, 2005

Today's edition of The Friday Five was inspired by a conversation I had with my English as a Second Language students. When someone asked about the word "nostalgia" I said, "You know that feeling you get when you hear a song you haven't heard since you were fifteen?"

Five Songs That Bring Back Very Specific Memories of My Teen Years

  1. "Big Money" by Rush -- The opening song of the Hold Your Fire Tour, my first big rock concert
  2. "Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Midler -- Changing the lyrics to "Did you ever know that Dave's my hero" and singing it loudly to my manager every time the song came on the radio at work
  3. "Heartbreak Beat" by The Psychedelic Furs -- The Furs, in general, remind me of my first crush
  4. "21st Century Boy" by Sigue Sigue Sputnik -- A friend brought a copy of Flaunt It to camp and it became the soundtrack of our summer
  5. "Litany (Life Goes On)" by Guadalcanal Diary -- A coworker player 2x4 to death at my first job
