Song of the Moment

Monday, October 31, 2005

Damn. I never did get around to writing about Joni Mitchell's "Hejira," which probably holds the Long Pauses record for "Song of the Longest Moment." For what it's worth, I chose it because I recently picked up a copy of the Shadows and Light DVD (highly recommended), and watching him play sent me off on a bit of a Jaco Pastorius kick. As an added bonus, here's another track from the same album. Listen to Jaco's harmonics and his beautifully melodic fretless playing on "Coyote."

I've been meaning to post the new Song of the Moment for a few weeks. Laura Veirs opened for Sufjan Stevens when I saw him in Toronto, and her album has really grown on me since. Her voice isn't pretty, exactly, but I like the way she delivers her lines. It's like she puts all of her faith in the melodies. If she hits the right notes, the song'll work, phrasing be damned. "Rialto" is brilliantly arranged. A shuffling, brush-stroke backbeat. An acoustic guitar keeping syncopated time. And intruding here and there a gorgeous distorted electric. I love the tone of that electric guitar.
