Because I can't seem to find the time to produce any original content, here's an assortment of articles that have given me some pleasure recently. Enjoy.
- Donald Barthelme's Syllabus -- Kevin Moffett discovers the joys of reading by working through Barthelme's favorites, 81 books in all. The piece reminds me of the afternoons I spent at The Paperback Rack in Tallahassee, Florida, browsing through the shelves of used books while my clothes dried at the laundromat next door.
- Interview with Claire Denis -- From the latest issue of Senses of Cinema. Next Wednesday I'll be flying to San Francisco for the first week of their film festival. Unfortunately, I arranged my travel plans before the lineup was announced, so I won't get a chance to see Denis's L'Intrus again.
- Progression: Liner Notes -- On Monday night I caught the John Scofield and Brad Mehldau trios at the Tennessee Theatre. Mehldau is a monster. An intelligent and articulate player, arranger, improviser, speaker, and writer. This essay is a meditation on democracy that name-drops Foucault, Beethoven, Kubrick, Kant, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
- A Culture of Death -- Frank Rich is one of many who is struck by the strange inconsistencies of the "doomsday right." See also Ken Morefield and Slacktivist.
