It's Beginning to Look at Lot Like . . .

Saturday, November 20, 2004

By mid-October each year my mom begins making formal requests for a Christmas list. She does this for at least two reasons: 1) She is ridiculously well-organized (for Joanna, the defining image of my mother is watching her scrub the kitchen floor behind her refrigerator -- and she wasn't even getting ready to sell the house!), and 2) She learned long ago that I am ridiculously, obnoxiously difficult to shop for. And that's why Amazon is a godsend.

The problem is that when I do finally sit down to create a wish list -- and I always do this a month or so after the first request from my mother because, let's face it, I procrastinate -- I can never remember any of the hundred or so DVDs, CDs, and books that would catch my eye if I were to, say, spend twenty minutes in Borders. That probably says something profound about the future of e-commerce and the fetishization of consumption, but, really, who cares, you know? I only mention any of this because I'm looking for suggestions.

Hear that? Inspired by largeheartedboy's recent birthday thread, I'm looking for gift ideas. Seriously. Do it for my mom. With a son like me, she needs the help.

Amazon, by the way, is convinced that I would like Meadowlands by The Wrens. It's been at the top of my recommendations for, like, months now, and I can't seem to get rid of it.
