Illumination: Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) *

Sunday, November 21, 2004

Man: What did Hiroshima mean to you in France?

Woman: The end of the war. I mean completely. Astonishment that they dared to do it, and astonishment that they succeeded. And the beginning of an unknown fear for us as well. And then indifference. And fear of indifference as well.

* Walter Benjamin dreamed of constructing a critical essay composed of nothing but quotations snipped from other texts. I'm borrowing the idea as a method of capturing something of my experience of a film when I don't have the time/energy/inclination to write about it at length.
