The challenge:
Discuss motion pictures, both officially sponsored by the federal government and commercially released that deal with the world wars. Consider not only motion pictures, but also shorts, documentaries and cartoons (i.e., Looney Tunes, SNAFU). Discuss the critical and popular success (or lack thereof) of Hollywood motion pictures made both during war-time, but also during the postwar periods citing specific examples (i.e., All Quiet on the Western Front, Casablanca, etc.). Also discuss influence of foreign-born film makers and actors on American films and documentaries during both world conflicts. Keeping in mind the theme of the series, highlight how the subject of this article, either from the perspective of the coming of war, war itself, or the legacy of war, affected American society and culture.
The real challenge: Do it all in 1500 words and by this time next week. This will be my first encyclopedia entry, which is something of a rite of passage for young academics -- those of us so desperate for another line on our vitae that we will gladly sacrifice a week of our lives. Nice. At least I'm getting paid for it. And it might actually be kind of fun.
