According to Maud, Philip Noyce will direct the film adaptation of Philip Roth's American Pastoral. Paul Bettany, Jennifer Connelly, and Evan Rachel Wood are rumored to star. Connelly could be an inspired choice for Dawn Levov, the Catholic, former Miss New Jersey. I'm not so sure about Bettany. He proved in Dogville that he can pull off an American accent, but Jewish? Granted, Swede Levov is a deliberately atypical Jew -- especially by Roth standards -- but Bettany?
Regardless, I'm glad to hear that Noyce will be directing. American Pastoral is such a rich novel. Stripping it down to a two hour film will be quite the challenge.
