Song of the Moment

Wednesday, January 14, 2004

I've been listening to a lot of Cat Power since this post two weeks ago. "Speak for Me" is probably my favorite track on the new album — that's what my iTunes "Play Count" tells me, at least. I'm not sure what to make of the lyrics, but that's nothing new. There's a charming simplicity to the last four lines that I really like, though. Obligatory Angels in America reference: "Ah, the twentieth century. The world has grown so terribly, terribly old."

pick us up we're all by ourselves
the great big howling is about to begin
a thousand miles from where it all begins
old world, the old world is
goin on and on (forfeit the shape of it)
the backhand to a touch is moving on again
what's next I'm outta time
losing my touch I can't feel
speak for me, do you see the same signs
do you know how to read between the lines
all in all it's all or none
all for one
what you want
pick us out of a line up
stranded and strange
just as innocent as kids
the found are leaving and they're tryin to forget
the old world, the old world is....
