If I Can Make It There

Tuesday, September 09, 2003

As if I needed another reason to make a trip to New York. From yesterday's Arts section:

Meanwhile, Tony Kushner resurfaces Off Broadway at the Joseph Papp Public Theater with a musical, "Caroline, or Change." Mr. Kushner has the most seriously adventurous mind of any American playwright working today, and this time he has turned it to a personal subject. The show, set in his home state of Louisiana in the early 1960's, focuses on a young Jewish boy and the black maid who worked for his family. Mr. Kushner wrote the book and the lyrics, and it should be fascinating to see him working in a new mode. Previews begin Oct. 28.

That picture of Ashley Judd as Maggie the Cat is also, um, intriguing.
