Godunov Revived

Tuesday, September 23, 2003

"I reject opera in the psychological and dramatic sense," he told a baffled audience at London's Riverside Studios that autumn, "and yet I do everything in my production [of Boris] to develop these aspects. In short, I am caught in a trap."

The Guardian has a great piece this week on the current revival of Andrei Tarkovsky's Boris Godunov. An interesting side note: Irena Brown, who was Tarkovsky's assistant during the 1983 production, mentions that he was asked to make a film about Lenin, but the authorities "hated his script - not surprisingly."
