Bush pledges $87 billion to Iraq reconstruction. Sounds like a lot of money, and it's certainly enough to get Congressional Democrats and Republicans in a huff, but how is this different from the $billion+ per week that we're already spending? And does this include military costs and economic development? You want democracy in Iraq? I still think it'll cost a trillion over the long haul . . . if it's possible at all. (A big IF.)
Bush sends Powell to placate the U.N. I requested a bit more humility, and there was something about a multilateral administrative authority, too, but it's a start.
And the mandatory one-year deployments for our military? Well, President Bush came through on that one, but, of course, he failed to mention it during his nationally televised speech, as I'd requested. Instead, this little detail worked its way into the papers two days later. I really wish he'd had the balls to look at the camera and say, "I am asking our military to spend a full year overseas."
