Song of the Moment

Friday, December 13, 2002

For me, the Christmas season hasn't really begun until Jonatha Brooke makes her beautiful rendition of "Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel" available to fans. The song will never be the same. Remember the opening of Apocalypse Now? That image of a lush green hillside being ripped open by napalm, accompanied by the sounds of helicopter rotors and "The End" by The Doors? Well, Jonatha's "Emmanuel" is kind of like that, except more startling and beautiful and dissonant. (That comparison will make a lot more sense after you have listened to the song.) At some point, Jonatha threatened to record a throwaway album composed entirely of Christmas carols in minor keys. I'm still waiting.

I really do hope to return to the blog as soon as possible, but, well, writing a dissertation prospectus is really hard. For now, here's my first attempt to work through some of the mysteries of Ordet, which might just be the greatest film ever.
